The Township of Cherry Hill is five miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is best known as home to the Garden State Park horse racetrack and the East Coast’s first enclosed shopping mall, the Cherry Hill Mall. Cherry Hill also boasts 49 parks and recreational facilities within its 24 square miles, along with a brand-new multi-million dollar public library and award-winning police and fire protection. Today, the community enjoys being home to 19 award-winning public schools, numerous places of worship, and a vibrant business sector known for shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations. HistoryDuring the late 1600s the first settlers from England arrived, coexisting peacefully with the Lenni-Lenape Native Americas who lived in the area that would become Cherry Hill. These Quaker followers of William Penn created the first settlement of Colestown. By 1844 the municipality was founded in Gloucester County and two weeks later became part of Camden County. At this point in time, Cherry Hill was known as Delaware, New Jersey.
The Township of Cherry Hill sought a new post office, but found that another New Jersey town had already claimed the name Delaware, New Jersey. The postal service suggested finding a new name for the Township and mayors Christian Weber and John Gilmour put on a campaign where citizens could select possible titles for the Township. The name ' Cherry Hill' was chosen by the township's citizens in a non-binding referendum in 1961, and was officially adopted November 7, 1961.
